A newly reported trail of 1.4-million-year-old footprints is giving researchers a rare look at an ancient human relative that appears to have been surprisingly large. The study suggests this powerful hominin may have grown to a body size close to that of modern humans, adding new detail to the picture of early human evolution.

Because footprints record movement as well as size, the find offers more than a simple fossil measurement. The trackway appears to show a group traveling together, and researchers say the pattern may point to all-male groups moving across the landscape. That interpretation is still cautious, but it highlights how footprint evidence can reveal social behavior that bones alone often cannot.
