India’s gold market could be reshaped by Gen Z, according to a new report that points to a Rs 315 lakh crore opportunity. The shift is being driven by younger consumers who are comfortable managing money on their phones and are increasingly looking at gold as more than a traditional jewellery purchase.
For this generation, gold appears to be gaining appeal as a flexible financial asset. That is helping boost interest in digital formats that make buying, holding or tracking gold easier through online platforms. The trend suggests that India’s next wave of gold demand may come as much from apps and digital products as from physical retail counters.
The report also highlights the wider economic potential of bringing more household gold into the formal financial system. India has long had significant private gold holdings, and better mobilisation of those assets could support deeper financial markets while creating new ways for consumers to use gold within broader savings and investment plans.
If this trend continues, Gen Z could become a major force in modernising how gold is owned and used in India. Rather than replacing the country’s traditional relationship with gold, digital adoption may expand it by linking a long-standing asset with new consumer habits and financial tools.
