Scientists in China have reported what appears to be the deepest animal ecosystem ever found on Earth. Writing in Nature on 30 July 2025, a team from the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Sciences described communities of blood-red tubeworms and white clams living on the floor of two Pacific trenches, roughly six miles below the surface.
The discovery is striking because the habitat lies far beyond the reach of sunlight. With no photosynthesis possible at those depths, the animals were found around leaking methane, showing that complex deep-sea life can survive by relying on chemical energy rather than solar energy.
According to the report, the submersible observations revealed thousands of animals gathered in these extreme environments. That suggests methane-fueled ecosystems may support far more life in the deepest parts of the ocean than previously understood, even under immense pressure and in permanent darkness.
The finding expands scientific understanding of where animal communities can exist and how they are sustained in the hadal zone, the deepest region of the ocean. It also highlights how much remains unknown about Pacific trenches and the unusual ecosystems hidden on the seafloor.
