Enceladus, a small moon of Saturn measuring about 500 kilometres across, is drawing renewed attention for its dramatic activity. Despite its modest size, the icy world continuously shoots water vapour and ice into space through fractures near its south pole, forming giant geysers that extend thousands of kilometres.

According to the report, the James Webb Space Telescope has mapped this escaping water, revealing just how far the plume spreads from the moon. The observations highlight Enceladus as one of the most active and unusual bodies in the solar system, with material constantly being launched from its surface into the surrounding environment.

The water in those plumes is especially important because it carries chemical building blocks associated with life. That makes Enceladus a major point of interest for scientists studying whether conditions beyond Earth could support biology, even on a moon that appears tiny compared with larger planets and satellites.
