Russia launched an overnight wave of ballistic strikes on Ukraine in what Ukrainian officials described as one of the biggest such attacks since the full-scale war began. The barrage drew fresh attention to the intensity of Moscow’s missile campaign and the pressure it is placing on Ukraine’s defensive systems.
Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called it the largest ballistic attack of the war, while Ukraine’s air force gave a slightly more measured assessment, saying it was among the biggest and the fourth assault of similar scale. Even with that difference in wording, both descriptions pointed to an unusually heavy strike.
The attack also highlighted a problem Kyiv has been warning about for months: a shortage of air defense resources. Ukrainian leaders have been urging partners to send more interceptors and related support as repeated missile and drone attacks test the country’s ability to protect its cities and critical sites.
Alongside its military requests to allies, Kyiv is also pressing the European Union to move forward with sanctions measures that have stalled. The latest barrage is likely to deepen those appeals, as Ukraine argues that stronger external support remains essential while Russia continues large-scale missile attacks.
