A signal once written off as noise has become one of space exploration's most remarkable milestones. When the Soviet Venera 7 capsule reached Venus on 15 December 1970, its radio link seemed to cut out at impact, and ground stations initially treated the remaining trace as static.
Engineers later took a closer look at the recording and found something far more important: 23 minutes of weak radio data hidden in the signal. That discovery meant Venera 7 had not gone completely silent after landing, as first believed.
