A new quantum research result suggests that a longtime problem for the field may also be part of the solution. Scientists report that the unavoidable leakage of energy and information from qubits into their surroundings can be harnessed to generate quantum entanglement, instead of only destroying it.
Entanglement is a core resource for quantum computing, communication and sensing, but it is typically fragile. In most setups, environmental noise and loss break the delicate links between quantum systems, especially when information has to move through imperfect channels. The new work points to a different strategy: creating entanglement without relying on direct transport through those noisy pathways.
The idea highlighted in the research is that “leaky” qubits may be useful under the right conditions. Rather than treating leakage only as an obstacle, the team showed it can be exploited in a controlled way to connect quantum systems. That could open an alternative route for building quantum networks and devices in situations where standard transmission methods are difficult or unreliable.
While the finding does not remove the broader challenge of noise in quantum technology, it reframes one of the field’s biggest weaknesses as a possible tool.
