CuspAI, a British artificial intelligence startup focused on discovering new materials for semiconductor manufacturing, has secured nearly half a billion dollars in funding with backing linked to Jeff Bezos. The company is aiming at a key challenge in the chip industry, where producing advanced semiconductors demands heavy energy use and relies on scarce raw materials.

The funding highlights growing investor interest in using AI to improve the foundations of chip production, not just chip design itself. By searching for alternative or better-performing materials, startups like CuspAI are trying to help manufacturers reduce bottlenecks tied to cost, supply constraints and the physical limits of current processes.

Chief executive and co-founder Chad Edwards said a large share of the new capital will support laboratory work with foundry partners in Cambridge, Singapore and the San Francisco Bay Area. That suggests the company is pairing software-driven discovery with hands-on testing and development, an important step in turning AI-generated ideas into materials that can be used in real semiconductor manufacturing.

The move comes as chipmakers face rising pressure to secure supply chains and improve efficiency while meeting global demand for powerful semiconductors. CuspAI’s latest raise positions it as a notable player in the effort to use AI to find the next generation of materials for chipmaking.
