The World Health Organization says Ebola is advancing at an unusually fast pace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising concern about how quickly the outbreak is expanding. According to the agency, the spread is outstripping that seen in earlier Ebola emergencies in the country.

At the same time, Uganda appears to be moving in the opposite direction. The country has discharged its last remaining Ebola patient, putting it close to being considered free of the virus if no new cases emerge.

The contrasting situations highlight how uneven Ebola outbreaks can be across neighboring countries. While health authorities in Uganda seem to be gaining control, officials are warning that the situation in the DRC remains serious and requires continued monitoring and response efforts.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned reporters that the outbreak in the DRC has grown faster than previous ones. The development underscores the pressure on public health systems to contain transmission, track contacts and prevent further cross-border risks.
