At the same time, Iran said it had struck two ships in the Strait of Hormuz and also hit targets in Bahrain and Jordan. Those claims point to a widening regional crisis, with pressure building across key waterways and areas where US allies and interests are present.
The Department of Defense also confirmed the identities of two of the US soldiers killed: Pte Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas, and Lt Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii. Their deaths have become a central part of the US response as officials frame the latest military action around retaliation.
With attacks and counterattacks now stretching beyond a single front, the situation is raising fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
