Astronomers have identified a new planet in the Beta Pictoris system, revealing an object that had effectively been hiding in plain sight. The find, highlighted by imagery from ESO’s Very Large Telescope, adds another world to one of the best-known nearby planetary systems.
The newly reported planet, called Beta Pictoris d, orbits the star Beta Pictoris. In the released image, the star itself sits at the center of the frame, though it was subtracted from the final view so researchers could better isolate the planet and study the surrounding area.
According to the report, the discovery relied on observations from two telescopes. That approach helped researchers pick out a planet that had not been clearly recognized before, despite the Beta Pictoris system already being a major focus of exoplanet research.
The result shows how improved observing methods and combined telescope data can still uncover new worlds in systems astronomers have watched for years. Even in a well-studied stellar neighborhood, planets can remain difficult to spot until imaging and analysis techniques bring them into view.
