NASA’s Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 continue to do what they were never expected to do for this long: operate in deep space and send data back to Earth. The twin probes, launched in 1977, were originally designed for a five-year mission focused on Jupiter and Saturn. Nearly 49 years later, they remain active and are still part of NASA’s working fleet.

Voyager 2 lifted off on 20 August 1977, followed by Voyager 1 on 5 September. Built for a much shorter lifespan, the spacecraft far outlasted their original timeline as they pushed beyond the outer planets and into interstellar space. NASA now lists both as the only human-made objects currently operating in that region.

Their survival is also a story of long-term engineering support. A dedicated team has kept the aging probes functional for decades, with some engineers spending a large part of their careers on the mission. That continued attention has helped the spacecraft keep transmitting despite the limits of old hardware and the immense distance involved.

The Voyager mission has become one of NASA’s most remarkable examples of endurance, both mechanical and human. What began as a late-1970s planetary mission has turned into a multidecade scientific effort, showing how far careful design and persistent mission management can carry a spacecraft long after its planned end.
