New research based on samples returned by China’s Chang’e-6 mission is shedding light on how Earth affects the solar wind that reaches the moon. Scientists say the moon has been exposed to streams of charged particles from the sun for billions of years, but the new findings point to a clear difference between the lunar near side and far side.

According to the study, Earth appears to slow the solar wind that strikes the moon’s near side. That means the two hemispheres are not hit by the same flow of particles: one side receives solar wind with different speed and energy than the other. The result adds a new layer to scientists’ understanding of the space environment around the Earth-moon system.

Because solar wind steadily interacts with the lunar surface, even small differences over very long periods could shape how materials on the moon are altered. Studying returned samples gives researchers a direct way to test how exposure conditions may vary from one region to another, instead of relying only on remote observations.

The findings also highlight the scientific value of Chang’e-6 material for lunar research. By comparing how solar wind affects different parts of the moon, researchers can better understand lunar surface evolution and the role Earth plays in modifying conditions in nearby space.
