LG monitors are facing scrutiny after a report said software tied to the displays can fill connected PCs with advertising. The issue appears linked to a program called "LG Monitor App Installer," which some users may not even realize is active on their systems.
According to the report, the ads can include prominent promotions for McAfee-branded protection tools, creating the impression that a computer has been compromised. The concern, however, is not necessarily an outside hack, but software associated with the monitor maker itself.
The report also suggests this is not limited to LG’s newest displays. Older monitors may be involved as well, widening the potential impact for users who may have installed monitor-related utilities in the past and then forgotten about them.
The controversy highlights a broader problem with bundled hardware software that keeps running in the background after setup. Even when intended as a support or installation tool, programs that deliver unexpected ads can blur the line between utility software and adware, especially when users are unaware they are installed.
