The U.S. military has identified the soldier killed in Iraq as Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, a 30-year-old father from Fayetteville, North Carolina. According to a military statement released Tuesday, he died during a controlled detonation involving an Iranian drone.
Swinton had served in the Army for nearly 10 years, the statement said. His death adds to the continuing risks faced by American troops deployed in the region, even during operations intended to secure and dispose of dangerous equipment.
Military officials said Swinton will be honored with several awards, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge. He is also set to be promoted posthumously to the rank of staff sergeant.
