A new interactive project called Puckstory visualizes the history of the Stanley Cup in network form, connecting champion teams with the players who helped win them. According to the project description, the graph includes every player engraved on the Cup from 1915 to 2026 and links them to the title-winning rosters they appeared on.
The dataset covers 1,306 players and 110 championship teams, turning more than a century of hockey history into a browsable map. Instead of listing winners year by year, the project shows how players and teams are tied together across eras through repeat champions and shared roster links.
One of the most notable findings is that the network has no isolated clusters. The creator says every Stanley Cup-winning team is connected to the rest of the graph because at least one player from each champion eventually won again elsewhere, preserving an unbroken chain across generations of NHL history.
The project also highlights how fragile that continuity could have been, with several moments where the overall connection nearly split.
