Anduril and Archer Aviation have announced the joint development of Thunder, a hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing platform aimed at both defense and commercial use. The companies unveiled the aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow, one of the aviation industry's key global events.
The project brings together Anduril's defense-focused background and Archer Aviation's work in advanced aircraft development. By introducing a platform designed for more than one market, the partners are positioning Thunder as a flexible VTOL offering rather than a product limited to a single mission profile.
The announcement also pointed to a defense variant, highlighting military applications as a central part of the program. At the same time, the companies said the aircraft is being developed with commercial use in mind, signaling a broader strategy around next-generation air mobility.
Thunder's debut adds to growing interest in aircraft that combine vertical takeoff and landing capability with newer propulsion systems. With this hybrid-electric VTOL platform, Anduril and Archer are entering a space where defense demand and commercial aviation ambitions are increasingly overlapping.
