Max Verstappen was the fastest driver in the opening Formula 1 practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix, edging Lewis Hamilton by just over a tenth of a second at Spa-Francorchamps. The early running offered a first look at the competitive order for the weekend, with Verstappen putting Red Bull at the top of the times.
Hamilton stayed close to the pace as the two former title rivals battled over the leading position in FP1. Their duel was one of the main storylines of the session, with Ferrari also appearing competitive in the opening phase of the event.
Red Bull’s performance suggested strong early speed around the Spa circuit, where teams were beginning to build up data and refine their setups. While first practice does not decide the weekend, it often provides a useful indication of form and where the closest fights may develop.
With Verstappen narrowly ahead and Hamilton within striking distance, the Belgian Grand Prix weekend began with a familiar contest at the front. The small margin between the pair points to a potentially tight battle as Formula 1 continues its running at Spa.
