New research highlighted by Nature suggests the heart has its own small network of nerve cells that acts like a “little brain.” In mice, scientists found that different groups of cardiac neurons appear to play distinct roles in controlling how the heart beats.

According to the report, one set of neurons helps the heart maintain a steady rhythm under normal conditions. Another group seems to protect the heartbeat during acute stress, reducing the risk that the organ will start malfunctioning when the body is under pressure.

The findings add to growing evidence that the heart is not controlled only by signals from the brain. It also relies on local neural circuits within the organ itself, which may help fine-tune heart function from moment to moment.

Although the work was carried out in mice, the study could guide future research into how stress affects the heart and how rhythm problems develop. Scientists may eventually use this kind of insight to better understand heart malfunction linked to disrupted nerve signaling.
