The International Space Station relies on a highly advanced toilet and water recovery system that turns waste into a usable resource. According to the report, the orbital bathroom costs about $23 million and is linked to a centrifuge-based recycler designed to process urine as part of a broader closed-loop setup.

That system does more than handle urine alone. NASA’s recycling process also captures moisture from sweat and cabin humidity, then purifies it for reuse as drinking water. The result is a recovery rate of around 98%, a level of efficiency that is crucial when resupplying water in orbit is difficult and expensive.

The technology highlights how space living depends on engineering that can conserve nearly every possible resource. On the ISS, water is not treated as disposable, but as part of a cycle that must be managed carefully to support astronauts during long missions.

NASA reportedly spent about 40 years refining this closed-loop approach. The finished system shows how decades of work in life-support and recycling technology have made it possible for crews aboard the space station to reuse water safely and reliably.
