A tapeworm appears to dramatically alter the biology of worker ants, according to research highlighted by Phys.org. In the ant species Temnothorax nylanderi, workers infected with the tapeworm Anomotaenia brevis were found to live much longer than uninfected ants in the same nest.
The changes go beyond lifespan. The infected workers are described as less active, and their metabolism shifts in a way that resembles that of a queen rather than a typical worker. That suggests the parasite is not simply living inside the ants, but is influencing how their bodies function over time.
The finding adds to growing evidence that some parasites can reshape the behavior and physiology of their hosts in highly specific ways. In this case, the infected ants seem to adopt traits linked to survival and reduced workload, which stands out in a species where worker and queen roles are usually very different.
Researchers say the study offers a closer look at how parasites can interfere with aging, energy use and social organization in insect colonies. The work also raises broader questions about how deeply parasites can affect lifespan and metabolism in complex animal societies.
