International researchers say the Jellyfish nebula may preserve evidence of two separate stellar explosions, not just one. According to the study, the star linked to the nebula may once have been part of a binary system with a companion that went supernova roughly 100,000 years earlier.
If confirmed, the finding would mark what researchers describe as the first known case of a binary star system in which both stars have ended their lives as supernovas. That possibility makes the Jellyfish nebula especially important for astronomers studying how massive stars evolve and how paired stars can influence each other's fate.
The new interpretation suggests the nebula's history may be more complex than previously understood.
