Rare earth elements are a crucial part of modern technology, showing up in products ranging from electric vehicle motors and LED lighting to MRI machines. Materials such as lanthanum, neodymium and dysprosium help enable these devices, but getting them ready for industrial use requires one difficult step: separating the elements from each other after mining.
That process has long been a major challenge because rare earth elements are chemically very similar. Historical methods have relied on complex processing and toxic chemicals to isolate individual elements, creating environmental and industrial concerns around the rare earth supply chain.
According to new research highlighted by Phys.org, atomic-scale channels may offer a different approach. Instead of depending on conventional chemical-heavy methods, these channels can distinguish between rare earth elements and separate them in a potentially cleaner way.
If the technique can be developed further, it could reduce the need for hazardous chemicals in rare earth refining while supporting demand for key materials used in energy, electronics and healthcare. The work points to a possible path toward more sustainable production of the elements that underpin many high-tech products.
