Scientists have identified a new spider species with an unusually aggressive way of hunting: it appears to use a catapult-like system built from silk. The discovery was made in the Australian rainforest, where researchers observed the spider relying on a spring-loaded trap rather than a standard web alone.

According to the report, the spider targets ants and uses tension in its silk structure to rapidly fling them into its web. That mechanism sets it apart from more familiar web-building spiders, which usually wait for prey to wander into sticky strands on their own.

The animal’s hunting setup has drawn attention because of its speed. Researchers described the trap as launching prey with extreme force, giving the spider a highly specialized way to capture fast-moving insects in its habitat.
