A NASA-led study is raising fresh concerns about the true strength of the Sun’s most extreme outbursts. According to the research, scientists may have been underestimating the upper limit of major solar storms because of a flaw in how these events were measured.

The study was led by physicists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and published in Nature on July 19. Its findings suggest that the most severe space weather events could be significantly more powerful than current planning assumptions have allowed.

That matters because solar storms can affect systems far beyond the Sun itself. Strong space weather has the potential to disrupt satellites, communications, navigation services and power infrastructure, so understanding the real scale of the risk is important for forecasting and preparedness.

By pointing to a possible measurement problem, the research adds a new layer to how experts evaluate rare but dangerous solar events. The study does not simply revise numbers upward; it suggests that the scientific community may need to rethink how it defines the outer limits of solar storm intensity.
