After months of speculation, the heavily disguised JLR test vehicle seen at places like the Nürburgring and in Arctic conditions appears to be something far different from what many expected. Instead of a new Velar, the prototype is being linked to an all-electric Range Rover GT fastback.
That would represent a major change for the brand. Range Rover has long been defined by upright, luxury-focused SUVs, so a lower-slung fastback EV would signal a sharp move away from the shape and stance that built its reputation over more than five decades.
The confusion is understandable. Spy photos of the low, camouflaged model fueled widespread guesses that JLR was preparing another version of the Velar or a related SUV. But the latest interpretation suggests the company has been testing a new electric grand touring model under the Range Rover name instead.
If that reading is correct, the vehicle could mark an important step in JLR's broader electric transition. A Range Rover-badged GT fastback would blend premium design, EV technology, and a more road-focused silhouette, creating a new lane for a brand best known for traditional luxury SUVs.
