Scientists have rediscovered a healthy coral reef off the coast of Benin, bringing new attention to a marine site that surveyors first suggested more than 60 years ago. The finding points to a thriving underwater habitat in West Africa that had long been presumed lost or forgotten.
Researchers say the area supports a living ecosystem that includes at least eight coral types and eight fish species. Even without extracted coral samples so far, the site has been classified as a mesophotic coral ecosystem, a kind of light-dependent reef community that exists near the lower limit of sunlight penetration in the ocean.
That classification is important because mesophotic coral ecosystems can differ from shallow tropical reefs while still playing a major role in marine biodiversity. Their depth and relative isolation can make them harder to detect and study, which helps explain how a reef in this region may have remained overlooked for decades.
The discovery adds to scientific interest in West Africa’s coastal waters and suggests there may be more ecologically significant reef systems in the region than previously documented. It also highlights how much remains unknown about deeper, low-light coral habitats and their role in supporting fish and other marine life.
