A Florida man has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming ChatGPT provided medical guidance that led him to put off getting treatment for symptoms that later developed into a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. According to the case, the chatbot's responses discouraged him from seeking prompt medical care.

The complaint argues that OpenAI failed to protect users who turn to ChatGPT for health-related information. It also alleges that the company crossed into the practice of medicine without a license by offering advice that the plaintiff says influenced his decisions during a medical emergency.

The case adds to a wider debate over how AI tools should handle sensitive topics such as symptoms, diagnosis and urgent care. Generative AI systems are widely used for everyday questions, but critics have warned that medical queries can carry serious risk if users treat chatbot answers as a substitute for professional evaluation.

OpenAI now faces another legal test over the limits of AI assistance and the safeguards expected when people use chatbots for health concerns. The lawsuit centers on whether the company did enough to warn users, restrict risky responses and prevent potentially dangerous reliance on AI-generated medical advice.
