A new study has revealed greater parasite diversity in Southeast Asian animals than previously recognized. While investigating Malaysian cats and Indonesian macaques as possible reservoirs for Brugia malayi, researchers also detected three filarial worms that had not yet been molecularly described.
The research centered on individual microfilariae, the larval stage of filarial nematodes, and combined morphological examination with several genetic approaches. The team analyzed mitochondrial genomes, 28S rRNA and sequences from Wolbachia endosymbionts to help distinguish closely related parasites that can be difficult to separate by appearance alone.
The findings suggest that animal hosts may carry a more complex mix of Onchocercidae species than expected. That is important for studies of vector-borne transmission because the same mosquito populations can be involved in spreading different filarial parasites, making surveillance and identification more challenging.
By showing how single-microfilaria analysis can improve parasite classification, the study adds new detail to the understanding of filarial worms in cats and macaques. It also highlights the value of molecular tools for tracking animal reservoirs and uncovering hidden species diversity in regions where filarial infections remain a public health concern.
