The research suggests that if diets improve, farming becomes more efficient, and food waste falls sharply, the way land is used for food production could look very different by 2050.
One of the biggest changes would be a steep reduction in livestock farming. With lower demand for animal-based foods, large areas of agricultural land could be freed up, easing pressure on forests and other natural landscapes. That shift could have a major climate benefit, with emissions linked to land-use change potentially falling by as much as 85%.
The transition would not simply mean producing less food overall. Instead, crop output would likely be redirected toward foods tied to healthier diets, including fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes.
