Australia's Lucas Herbert came within one shot of a place in major championship history before a late mistake left him with a second-round 62 at the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
Herbert had a chance to post a 61, which would have been the lowest round ever recorded at a men's major. But his bid for that landmark score slipped away at the 18th, where he bogeyed the closing hole after pulling a five-foot putt wide.
Even without the record, it was still a standout round from the Australian and one of the biggest talking points of the day at Royal Birkdale. For most of the round, Herbert had put himself in position to deliver a truly historic number.
Instead, the finish brought a frustrating end to an otherwise brilliant performance. A 62 remains an exceptional score at The Open, but the closing bogey ensured Herbert was left to reflect on how close he came to something even more remarkable.
