Tokyo Metro is introducing new ticket gates at Ginza and Ueno stations that will not accept Suica or other IC transit cards. Instead, the new machines are set up for payment by credit card or with a QR code linked to a one-day pass.
The change stands out because Suica and similar IC cards are a familiar part of everyday travel in Tokyo. At two of the city’s busiest subway stops, the arrival of gates using different payment methods signals a notable shift in how some passengers may enter the system.
Ginza and Ueno are major stations serving heavily used parts of the capital, including popular shopping, sightseeing, and transportation areas. That means the new gates are likely to be noticed quickly by both regular commuters and visitors who are used to tapping an IC card for access.
While the move does not suggest the end of IC cards across Tokyo’s rail network, it does highlight a broader push toward alternative fare technology. For passengers passing through Ginza or Ueno, paying attention to which gate they choose may become more important as these new options are rolled out.
