The Hoba meteorite in Namibia is one of the most unusual impact finds on Earth. It is described as the largest intact meteorite on the planet and the biggest known natural piece of iron, with a present-day weight of about 60 metric tons. Even more striking, it still sits where it came down.

What makes Hoba especially puzzling is what is missing. A space rock of that size would normally be expected to leave a dramatic impact crater, yet the area around it shows no obvious hole. That contrast has long made the Namibian meteorite a standout case in planetary science.

The leading explanation is that Hoba may not have hit the ground in the way people usually imagine meteorite impacts. Rather than slamming down at extreme speed, it likely lost much of its velocity before reaching the surface. A slower, less violent landing would help explain how such a massive iron body could remain largely intact without blasting out a crater.

That combination of size, composition and landing conditions is why the Hoba meteorite continues to attract attention. It is not just a giant space rock in Namibia, but a rare example of how an object from space can reach Earth in a surprisingly gentle way and leave behind more questions than damage.
