Astronomers have identified a compact group of six young galaxies dating to about 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang. The finding stands out because it captures a very early stage in cosmic history and may show a large galaxy taking shape through the gradual gathering of smaller systems.

According to the report, the unusually tight grouping offers a possible snapshot of galaxy building in progress. Rather than appearing as a single finished giant galaxy, the system seems to reveal growth happening piece by piece, which fits the idea that some of the universe’s biggest galaxies were assembled from smaller young galaxies in the early universe.

Researchers describe the discovery as a rare glimpse into a difficult-to-observe phase of galaxy formation. Seeing six young galaxies so close together at such an early time could help astronomers understand how matter collected, how structures grew, and how massive galaxies emerged not long after the universe began.

The study outlining the discovery was submitted to arXiv, and the result adds to ongoing efforts to trace the origins of the largest galaxies. Even from this limited snapshot, the newly spotted group offers an important clue about how complex cosmic structures may have formed in the universe’s first billion years.
