A long-running microlensing survey has delivered one of the clearest estimates yet of how many starless planets drift through the Milky Way. Based on nine years of observations, the study indicates there may be roughly 20 free-floating, planet-mass objects for every star in the galaxy.
That ratio points to an enormous hidden population: trillions of dark worlds moving through interstellar space without orbiting a sun. Because these objects do not shine on their own, they are extremely difficult to detect, making microlensing one of the few ways to build a broader census of them.
The new count is described as the most complete so far for small, dark bodies in the planet-mass range that roam the galaxy alone. Researchers generally think many of these worlds were born inside normal planetary systems and later expelled, leaving them to wander through the Milky Way as orphaned planets.
If the estimate holds up, it would reshape how scientists think about planetary formation and the overall makeup of the galaxy. Instead of being rare oddities, rogue planets may be one of the Milky Way’s most common kinds of worlds, even though they remain almost invisible against the darkness between the stars.
