Harangi dam in Karnataka's Kodagu district has reached, or is operating at, its full storage limit after continued heavy rain pushed up inflows. With water levels rising quickly, authorities issued a flood alert linked to the reservoir.
The warning comes as officials prepare to increase the dam's outflow. According to the available details, discharge is expected to be raised to around 3,000 to 5,000 cusecs as part of water management measures after the sharp increase in incoming water.
Heavy rainfall in the region appears to be the main reason for the rapid filling of the reservoir. When a dam nears capacity during an active rain spell, controlled release becomes important to maintain safety and reduce pressure on the structure.
