Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi used a Shanghai Cooperation Organization foreign ministers meeting on Friday to argue that the wider world has failed to support Iran in its standoff with the United States. Speaking at the China-linked forum, he said the international response has fallen short of what Tehran expected.
His remarks showed clear frustration with governments and institutions that, in Iran’s view, have not taken a strong enough position. Rather than presenting the dispute as only a bilateral issue, Araghchi framed it as a test of whether other countries are willing to push back against U.S. pressure.
By raising the issue at an SCO gathering, Araghchi placed Iran’s complaint before a major multilateral forum. The setting gave him a platform to underline Tehran’s message that silence or neutrality from the broader international community amounts to a failure to defend Iran’s position.
The speech highlights how tensions between Iran and the United States are also being fought on the diplomatic stage, not just through direct policy disputes. Araghchi’s comments suggest Tehran is looking for more visible political support from countries and groups outside the Western orbit.
