Assam’s flood toll has climbed to 47, with eight people still missing in the latest wave of flooding, according to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma said the current situation was unusual because of the pattern and intensity of the rain.
The chief minister pointed to exceptionally heavy rainfall in Nagaland and in Assam’s Charaideo district as key reasons behind the severe flooding. Water flowing downstream from Nagaland added to the pressure, while Charaideo itself saw extreme rainfall, worsening conditions in affected areas.
The update highlights how cross-border river flow and intense local rain combined to create a more serious flood situation than usual. Assam is prone to monsoon flooding, but the government’s latest remarks suggest this episode has been shaped by an especially difficult weather mix.
With dozens of deaths confirmed and several people still unaccounted for, the flood emergency remains a major concern in the state. Officials are continuing to monitor the impact as heavy rain and swelling waters keep pressure on vulnerable districts.
