A UK volunteer has become the first person to receive a new experimental Ebola vaccine being developed by an Oxford team. The participant, Ed Hunt, 37, said he signed up after seeing news coverage of the deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The development marks an early step in testing a potential new vaccine against Ebola, a virus that has caused repeated outbreaks in parts of Africa. Interest in new vaccine research has remained high as health teams continue to look for better ways to contain and prevent future spread.
According to the Oxford researchers, another small Ebola vaccine trial is expected to begin soon in Uganda. That will be followed by a larger study in DR Congo designed to examine how well the vaccine works.
The staged approach shows how the programme is moving from initial human testing toward broader evaluation in areas more directly affected by the disease. For researchers, the first dose given to a volunteer is an important milestone in the wider effort to improve Ebola protection.
