China's Ant Forest app has turned everyday low-carbon choices into a large-scale tree-planting effort. Since 2016, the program has linked users' daily actions, such as choosing greener ways to travel or handling tasks online, to virtual points that help pay for real trees to be planted.
According to the information provided, that system has now led to 122 million real trees being planted. The resulting planted area spans about 112,000 hectares of dry land, showing how small personal decisions can be combined into a much bigger environmental project.
The idea behind Ant Forest is simple: users are rewarded inside the app for habits that reduce emissions in daily life. Those digital rewards are then converted into support for planting in some of China's driest regions, where restoring vegetation can help improve fragile landscapes.
