Researchers reporting in Scientific Reports say an intravenous hydrogen-rich acetated Ringer’s solution reduced liver injury in rats with heatstroke. The study points to protection of the endothelial glycocalyx as a possible reason for the benefit.
The endothelial glycocalyx is a delicate layer that lines blood vessels and helps maintain normal vascular function. In severe heatstroke, damage to blood vessels can contribute to organ injury, including harm to the liver. Based on the study title, preserving this layer may have helped limit that damage in the animal model.
The findings suggest that a hydrogen-enriched resuscitation fluid could offer more than basic fluid replacement during extreme heat illness. By supporting the blood vessel lining, the treatment may reduce downstream organ stress in heatstroke-related injury.
Because the research was done in rats, the results should be viewed as preclinical rather than direct evidence for human treatment. Still, the work adds to interest in therapies that target vascular protection as a way to lessen heatstroke complications.
