Donal Lenihan believes Ireland have shown more than once that they can produce some of their sharpest rugby at the tail end of a demanding season. That pattern, he argues, offers encouragement ahead of another major test, even after a long and draining campaign.
A key reason for that confidence is Andy Farrell’s ability to have his side ready when it matters most. The Ireland head coach is credited with getting the balance right at important moments, and recent seasons have strengthened the view that his teams can still find another level late in the schedule.
Even so, Lenihan’s assessment is that New Zealand remain slightly better placed. Ireland may have a strong finish in them, but the All Blacks’ overall quality and big-game pedigree give them the upper hand heading into the contest.
The outlook, then, is for Ireland to be highly competitive and capable of a late-season surge, while still facing a formidable challenge. If they do hit top form again, they can make it close, but recent evidence still points to the All Blacks holding the edge.
