Apple TV’s new film "The Dink" turns the fast-growing world of pickleball into comedy, using the sport’s rivalries and quirks as its main punchlines. The movie stars Jake Johnson and appears to lean into the parts of pickleball culture that outsiders often notice first: local court drama, debates over space, and that unmistakable popping sound of the ball.
The story highlighted around the release suggests the movie is less about athletic glory than about the social politics surrounding the game. That includes turf wars over courts and friction with tennis players, a real-world tension that has followed pickleball as it has expanded into parks and clubs.
The project also caught the attention of Anna Leigh Waters, one of the sport’s best-known names. According to the report, she initially had concerns when she learned a broad comedy in the spirit of movies like "Talladega Nights" or "Dodgeball" was being made about pickleball, a sign of how protective many players feel about the sport’s image.
Even so, that sensitivity may be exactly what gives "The Dink" its material. By lampooning the seriousness, territorial disputes and growing pains around pickleball, the movie taps into a culture that has become popular enough to parody.
