Astronomers have directly confirmed four white dwarfs within 65 light-years of Earth, revealing stellar remnants that had remained overlooked for decades. These objects are the dense, burned-out cores left behind after Sun-like stars reach the end of their lives.

The newly confirmed white dwarfs were difficult to spot because they orbit brighter red dwarf stars. Their faint light was effectively washed out by the glare of those companion stars, making them hard to identify with conventional observations even though they are part of the Sun’s broader cosmic neighborhood.

Researchers used the Hubble Space Telescope’s ultraviolet capabilities to separate the white dwarfs from the red dwarfs they circle. That approach allowed astronomers to directly confirm the hidden stars rather than just suspect they were present from indirect clues.

One of the four is especially notable because it is described as the ninth closest white dwarf to the Sun. The finding suggests that even nearby space can still hold previously missed objects, particularly when dim stellar remnants are masked by brighter companions.

The discovery adds to scientists’ picture of the local stellar population and shows how ultraviolet observations can uncover nearby white dwarfs that are otherwise concealed. It also highlights how much remains to be learned about the stars in Earth’s immediate galactic surroundings.
