Butser Ancient Farm has showcased an unusual archaeology experiment by running a reconstructed Roman hypocaust continuously for eight days. The project, presented in a video released in July 2026, looks at how the ancient heating design performed when kept in operation over an extended period.

A hypocaust was the Roman method of warming rooms by sending heat beneath floors and through built spaces, effectively creating an early form of central heating. By keeping the system fired for more than a week, the team aimed to learn more about the temperatures it could reach and how efficiently the design worked in practice.
