A 14-year-old boy is assisting police after a hoax threat was made against a Qatar Airways flight bound for Manchester Airport. The incident triggered a major security response as the aircraft approached the UK.
According to the Ministry of Defence, two RAF Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on Friday to intercept the plane. The response was launched after authorities received a threat involving the flight.
Officials later said the warning was a hoax. Even so, the interception highlighted the seriousness with which any possible risk to a passenger aircraft is handled, especially when a flight is nearing a major airport.
Police are continuing to investigate the false alert, with the teenage boy now assisting officers. The case centers on the hoax call that led to the RAF deployment and heightened concern around the incoming Qatar Airways jet.
