India has launched its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a notable step in the country’s railway network. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the passenger service from Jind railway station in Haryana on Friday.
The new train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, covering a distance of 89 km. According to the details shared, the journey is expected to take around two hours.
A key feature of the service is its connectivity along the route, with halts at 12 intermediate stations. That makes the train not only a symbolic first for Indian Railways, but also a regular passenger service designed to serve multiple stops between the two Haryana stations.
With the rollout of this hydrogen-powered train, India has added a new technology-led passenger service to its rail system. The launch puts the focus on how alternative propulsion is beginning to find a place in everyday railway operations.
