More than one million people in the UK could face holiday disruption this summer because of passport validity rules for travel to Europe, according to new research. The issue is not limited to passports that have already expired, as some destinations require a minimum amount of validity remaining before entry.
Data highlighted in the report shows 705,904 UK passports have fewer than three months left before they expire. That means many travellers could be at risk of being turned away from boarding or forced to change plans if they do not check their documents well before departure.
The analysis, carried out by Compare the Market and shared with the Daily Mail, suggests a wider group of Britons may be affected once different travel scenarios are taken into account. The warning comes at the start of the busy summer getaway period, when large numbers of UK holidaymakers head to European destinations.
The findings are a reminder for travellers to review their passport expiry date and any validity requirements for the country they plan to visit. Even if a passport appears current, failing to meet entry rules could still cause delays, extra costs or cancelled trips.
