Russian missile attacks on Kyiv have killed at least nine people and injured more than two dozen others, according to local officials. The strikes hit Ukraine's capital, damaging homes and sparking fires across the city.
The attack also highlighted the strain on Ukraine's air defenses. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukrainian forces were able to intercept only one of 27 Russian ballistic missiles during the assault.
Zelenskiy said the low interception rate reflects a lack of interceptors for the US-made Patriot missile defense systems used by Ukraine. His comments pointed to the difficulty of defending the capital against large-scale ballistic missile barrages when air defense supplies are limited.
The latest strike on Kyiv adds to the civilian toll from repeated attacks on major Ukrainian cities. Emergency responders were left dealing with fatalities, injuries, residential damage and multiple fires after the missiles hit the capital.
