Morocco says its decision to name a major highway after Donald Trump is intended as a sign of respect and gratitude toward the US president. According to Moroccan King Mohammed VI, the move reflects his country's “deep appreciation” for Trump.
The highway is described as a roughly US$1 billion project and is notable because it extends into the disputed territory of Western Sahara. That detail gives the naming added political weight, since the area remains one of North Africa’s most sensitive territorial issues.
In explaining the decision, the Moroccan monarch also praised what he called Trump’s historic role, linking the road naming to broader US-Morocco relations.
